The
fight goes on
NANTWICH
Walled Garden Society is to continue the fight to save the
garden visited by King James I, and for which planning
permission for six houses and two flats has been granted.
Alternative proposals discussed at the society’s annual meeting
in December 2009, and which were voted against by members, were
to dissolve the society and to continue to fight solely for the
restoration of the walls.
The
current position with the planning permission is it has been
granted but not formally issued in writing. The delay was partly
caused by the society’s threat of legal action which put
everything on hold for three months.

Pat Fulford
WE regret to announce the death of
our founder, Pat Fulford. She had been been ill for a while. A funeral service at St Mary's Parish Church, Nantwich,
on Monday, November 23, 2009, was followed by cremation at Crewe.
A tribute to her
appears on this page.
THE society has lost two valuable
members in the space of a few months. The Treasurer (Peter
Greene) was the other one. See panel below.
The Secretary, Nicola
Booth, said: "Sadly, since the EGM in April 2009, two long-standing
members of our society have died. Peter Greene, who had been
treasurer of the society since its inception, died suddenly
shortly after the EGM.
"Pat Fulford the
founder of the society and long time secretary died in November after a long illness which had forced her to stand down
last year.
"The society could not
have achieved what it has without their great efforts and
support over the years. We offer our condolences to all friends
and family." |
Peter Greene
THE Committee and society
members were saddened by the death of our treasurer,
Peter Greene in 2009. He had been a great supporter of the society
and was present at the inaugural meeting in April 2002 when
a committee was set up to start the campaign which
eventually led to the formation of the society.
Peter had been our
only Treasurer and the Committee are very grateful for all
his hard work and support over the years. Our sympathy goes
to his wife, Lillian, and his family.
Committee member
Noelle Williamson has kindly agreed to act as Treasurer for
the time being.

Newspaper reader backs garden over
bandstand
AFTER a number of ideas were put
forward by members of the Nantwich First group on Nantwich Town
Council - including a
bandstand on Mill Island - a reader of the local newspaper, The
Nantwich Chronicle, wrote to the Editor suggesting the Walled
Garden would be a better project to spend the money on. Our
Chairman thanks that reader.

Chairman hits out at Councillors
FOLLOWING the decision of the
Borough Council Development Control Committee to permit housing
to go ahead on the walled garden site, our Chairman (Peter
Harrington) hit out at local councillors.

Pie in the sky?
IN The Nantwich Chronicle of
February 18, 2009, Cllr Bill McGinnis of Nantwich Town Council,
described the Nantwich Walled Garden Society's ideas for the
walled garden as "Pie in the Sky". Not surprisingly, we don't
agree. A letter was sent to the Editor of The Nantwich
Chronicle by our then Secretary, Nicola Booth.

MP supports our campaign to save the Walled Garden

THE Member of Parliament for Crewe and
Nantwich, Edward Timpson, is supporting our
efforts to save the Walled Garden.
He visited the garden in 2008 to see for
himself what Nantwich could lose if the plans went ahead.
At the time, our Chairman, Peter Harrington,
said Mr Timpson "has written to Crewe and Nantwich Borough Council to
register his concern at the proposal to build six houses and two
apartments on the walled garden site and to call for the garden's
retention because of its architectural and historical significance."
Mr Harrington added: "This is
encouraging because his backing and the general support we have received
from Nantwich residents - both for the petition against the planning
application and with many letters of opposition - shows how much
everyone values this part of our heritage and wants to keep it." Photo by courtesy of

Member funds legal planning specialist
THANKS have been expressed to Mr George
Basnett who kindly funded a legal planning specialist when we made
representations to Crewe and Nantwich Borough Council in 2008 opposing the
latest planning application for the Walled Garden.
Retiring Secretary, Pat
Fulford, said: "We were able to receive such good advice from them. Mr
Basnett really came to our aid at a key time and I am sure that all
members will wish to thank him."

representation made on our behalf by the legal planning specialist.
